Gramps: Adding an Image placeholder

Option 1:

  1. Find or create a placeholder image (e.g., a silhouette in JPG/PNG).

  2. In Gramps, go to Media → Add and import this placeholder once.

  3. Give it a descriptive name like “Default Photo”.

  4. Now, for each person without a photo:

    • Open their Person Editor (double-click the person).

    • Go to the Gallery tab.

    • Click Add → Existing Object, then select your “Default Photo.”

    • Save.

This method allows for anyone without a photo points to the same placeholder media file (saving disk space).

Option 2: Use a Gramplet or Addon (for automatic placeholders)

  • The “Dynamic Web Report” addon has an option to use a default image when someone doesn’t have one.
  • You can set the default image path in the report settings.
  • When generating charts/reports, it will auto-fill the placeholder where no photo exists.
