4. If your lover kept a private journal that was easily accessible, under what circumstances might you read it without permission?  For example, what if your relationship were on the rocks and you were confused about your partner’s feelings?

I’m reading the journal way before it gets to a rocky point in the relationship.  I’m reading it early on if I know I won’t get caught.  I have no clue what it takes to succeed in a romantic relationship so I want all the insights I can get in order to succeed and keep her happy.  Yeah, that probably is cheating but when you are alone and you don’t want to be, you’ll strongly consider shortcuts in order to make things work.
